    Google’s SEO Starter Guide

    Google SEO Starter Guide

“What are some simple ways that I can improve my website’s performance in Google?” There are lots of possible answers to this question, and a wealth of search engine optimization information on the web, so much that it can be intimidating for newer webmasters or those unfamiliar with the topic. Google thought it’d be useful to create a compact guide that lists some best practices that teams within Google and external webmasters alike can follow that could improve their sites’ crawlability and indexing.

Google’s Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide covers around a dozen common areas that webmasters might consider optimizing. We felt that these areas (like improving title and description meta tags, URL structure, site navigation, content creation, anchor text, and more) would apply to webmasters of all experience levels and sites of all sizes and types. This guide contains many illustrations, pitfalls to avoid, and links to other resources that help expand the explanation of the topics. So, now there is a simple answer to the question, “I’m new to SEO, how do I improve my site?”. Just take a look at the list of best practices recommended by Google.”

And if that’s not enough for you, the SEO Starter Guide is now available in 40 languages!

    SEO: Pay-per-Click sucks!

    Internet Marketing, SEO

If users find it annoying, just stop it!

As a search engine user, I ‘ve always found myself clicking on the main results of my query on the first page of Google and not on paid ads (PPC – Pay per Click). Paid entries sure catch my eye (since they take up 1/3 of the screen nowadays) but I feel that their owners have used a sneaky way to attract my attention and I want to “punish” them for that. Pay per click entries have the same effect on me as TV commercials; they just degrade my experience with the medium.

On the other hand, when I search for something I tend to think that hits (free listings) that appear on the first page of Google are somewhat of experts or leaders in what I am looking for. Weirdly enough, I sometimes overlook the first one-two results thinking they are too big to care or something similar – but maybe that’s just me. Where am I going with this? I believe my Internet search pattern/attitude is quite common among many people, especially those who understand a few things about Internet advertising, marketing and so on.

This clearly demonstrates the importance of SEO. Advertising itself is not an immoral or bad act in any way, but we have to look at the facts. If users find it annoying, just stop it! Internet offers you a wealth of marketing opportunities. Google has made accessible a world of information on her indexing and ranking techniques; information that SEO specialists take into account when they devise their Search Engine Optimization strategies. If, as a company, you have a certain budget for Web marketing, don’t go spend it on Pay-per-Click; go the hard way, man up and outsource this to an SEO specialist.

It may take a little longer for you to notice an increased traffic and better conversion rates, but once they come they will stay! Internet users tend to appreciate those who choose the hard way. Your corporate image is not all about colours, logos, renewable energy and so on… think about Internet users. Whatever you sell, you surely want to look ‘cool’ in their eyes. Just think that below you and above you in that sorry banner of Google paid ads, there could be casino companies, sex shops, you name it …that may happen to share a keyword with you. Google users are not going to spend their valuable time to try and disassociate your company from the sex shop – you are doomed!
